MG Car Club Moab Trip to South Dakota
September 4 - 8, 2008

Tentative Plans

The trip to the Black Hills this year is one of "flexibility". There are so many attractions to visit, you may not find time to see them all (a good reason to return again sometime). You may choose to strike out on your own or join one of the many small groups being organized by different club members to visit the various attractions listed on this web site.

If you have an interest in organizing a visit to one of the attractions listed on the attractions tab (i.e. Mount Rushmore, Badlands), send babymg@comcast.net the details (date/time/rendevous point) and it will be posted on this page.

Below find a list tentative of dates and times for the drive to the Black Hills and for visiting some of the attractions as a group. These are all subject to change, depending upon the interest and commitment by participants.

The Drive to Hill City:

Meeting Places:

Rendevous in Denver or Ft. Morgan -
Date/time: Wednesday, September 3rd

Location: Denver (TBD) or Ft. Morgan at the Dairy Queen
Augie Burgoon plans to travel up I-76 to Ft. Morgan, then north to the Black Hills with an overnight in Sidney NE. (See the "routes" tab for more details.) Contact him for more information.

Rendevous in Cheyenne, Wyoming -
Date/time: Thursday, September 4th at 9:00 am
or 10:00 am
Location: The Hitching Post - Ramada Inn, 1700 W. Lincolnway, Cheyenne Wyoming 82001
(307) 638-3301 (See the "routes" tab for more details.)
Meet in Mildred's Coffee House at the Ramada Inn - come early and eat breakfast

Some people plan to drive up to Cheyenne Wednesday (Sep 3rd) and stay overnight before meeting the group Thursday morning at the Ramada Inn.

Additional meeting places will be posted when other groups have notified us of their plans.

Friday Events (Sept 5th):

1880 Train
Vintage steam train traveling between Hill City and Keystone. Two hour roundtrip through Black Hills National Forest.
Location: Hill City / Keystone
Price: RT - $21.00, OW - $17.00
Website: http://www.1880train.com

Rather than try to gather a group of 20 or more committed people to get the group rate, we will just publish a date/time for riding the train together. Click the 1880 Train link above to make and pay for your own reservations for the following times on Friday, September 5th:

Depart Hill City:
10:00 am from the train depot - arrive Keystone: 11:00 am (sightsee and have lunch here)
Depart Keystone:
2:30 pm from the train depot - arrive Hill City: 3:30 pm (head off to the winery for a tasting)

Prairie Berry Winery
Wine tasting and wine gift shop. Lunch. Private event room available for groups. Located next to the Mistletoe Ranch Xmas shop and Quilt shop.
Location: Three miles NE of Hill City
Hours open: M-Sat 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Sun noon - 4:00 pm

Website: http://www.prairieberry.com

We will plan a wine tasting Friday as a "happy hour" event and then adjourn to a nice restaurant for dinner.
Meet at the Prairie Berry Winery for a taste of the local wines between 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

Saturday Events (Sept 6th):

Spearfish Canyon and Spearfish Canyon Lodge
Tour beautiful Spearfish Canyon and stop at the Lodge for lunch.
Location: between Lead and Spearfish
Website: http://www.spfcanyon.com

Departing Hill City: 9:00 am -
Let's take a group drive up beautiful Spearfish Canyon, visiting the Cheyenne Crossing Stage Stop Cafe along the way for a cup of coffee or tea. We'll stop for lunch at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge, built in the tradition of the great inns of our national parks. We can walk through the lodge and stroll the beautiful grounds.

I have made arrangements for a group lunch at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge restaurant which will be an executive deli buffet including non-alcoholic drinks. To qualify for the special group arrangements, we must have a minimum number of people and pay ahead of time.

The price for the full buffet lunch will be $13.50 per person which includes tax and tip. I will need to have your commitment and your payment for this lunch buffet no later than August 25th, when I must call in our numbers to the Lodge restaurant. You may pay this at the August MGCC meeting (Aug. 13th) or contact the Tourmeister Jackie Jones at babymg@comcast.net for mailing instructions. Make checks payable to "MGCC".

On the way back, we can take the I-90 highway past Sturgis and Deadwood into Rapid City, finding a nice spot for dinner along the way. The Elk Creek Station restaurant located on I-90 just before Rapid City serves a nice dinner fare.

Devils Tower - side trip
If you have an interest in visiting Devil's Tower (west of Spearfish in Wyoming), join Augie Burgoon on Saturday as a diversion off the Spearfish Canyon drive.

At the end of the canyon drive in Spearfish, Augie will be headed west on I-90 into Wyoming to view this special attraction most recognized from the movie "Close Encounters". For more information on this side trip, contact Augie. You can find his email address in the MGCC Member directory.
