Not so Fast, but Scenic Routes off
the Interstate
Wyoming -
To avoid the Interstate, you can travel from the Denver-Metro
area North to Cheyenne using one of these highways:
- west of the interstate - Wadsworth/Hwy 287 to Ft.
Collins. Go east on Hwy 14 to Hwy 85 and north to
Cheyenne (approx. 110 miles).
- east of the interstate - Pick up Hwy 85 north at
Hwy 76 or Brighton through Greely and on to Cheyenne
(approx. 110 miles).
Rendezvous Point: Ramada Inn - Hitching Post
For individuals wishing to meet at a point north of
Denver-metro, on the south side of Cheyenne on Lincolnway,
there is a Ramada Inn - Hitching
Post Conference Center. It has a
cafe where you can have coffee or breakfast while you
wait for the rest of the group to arrive for a departure
time of either 9:00 or 10:00 am.
A number of participants are planning on traveling
to Cheyenne Wednesday and staying the night, rather
than drive all that way up so early Thursday morning.
- From Cheyenne, you will need to take a short stretch
of I-25 north (approx. 8 miles) to reach Hwy 85 north.
- Go north on Hwy 85 outside of Cheyenne to Torrington
(approx. 73 miles).
- At Torrington, turn west on Hwy 26 to Lingle (approx.
10 miles).
- At Lingle, go north on Hwy 85 to Lusk (approx. 87
miles).
- At Lusk, go north on Hwy 19/85. On this road, you
have two options for turning east:
More scenic option:
- Continue on 18/85 north and turn east at Hwy 18
to Edgemont (approx. 50 miles). There is a rest stop
here.
- Take Hwy 18 east to Hwy 89 north (approx. 34 miles).
- Take Hwy 89 north to Pringle (approx. 17 miles).
- At Pringle, continue north on Hwy 385 through Custer
to Hill City (approx. 33 miles).
Less scenic option:
- Continue on 18/85 north and turn east at Hwy 16
(approx. 83 miles).
- Travel east on Hwy 16 to Custer (approx. 37 miles).
- At Custer, take Hwy 385 north to Hill City (approx.
21 miles).
Total for either option - approx. 426 miles (This will
take longer, as the speed limits along this route are
less.)
Nebraska -
You may choose to travel up through Nebraska to the
Black Hills. Augie Burgoon offers some plans for taking
that route. If you are interested in joining him, call
or email him (his info is in the MGCC directory). Augie's
plans and route:
I will go to Sidney NE for the night of Sep. 3rd and
stay at the Sidney Motor Lodge. (where we stayed in
2001)
That means that I will meet "youns guys" (Pittsburgh
talk) at the designated motel in Hill city on the 4th.
(did I get it right?) I expect to get there in the afternoon.
If anyone else wants to visit the Cabala's they are
more than welcome to join me. (I need a new belt and
it may take an entire buffalo hide to make one)
Sidney Motor Lodge

Dinner at the Buckhorn Restaurant across the street.
(If it is still there. Wasn't that the name of the place?
I can't remember as far back as breakfast!)
Picnic lunch available at Safeway across the street.
We can stop at "Auto-henge" and/or "Museum
of the Fur Trade" on the way to Hell City if anyone
wants to go this way. (or not)
Rendezvous Point: I will be coming through Denver
at about 10:30 on Sep. 3rd (if anyone cares and wants
to meet up). I intend to stop at the Dairy Queen in
Ft. Morgan, as it is the best DQ ever.
